Samsung, a company whose machines have consistently impressed us with solid keyboards, performance, and endurance have added two new machines to their "N" series of netbooks, the Samsung N130 and N140. Both new netbooks have 10.1 inch screens and, unlike many new netbooks, are already available in the UK.

Many of the original range of netbooks were cheap looking, almost like toys, but they have grown into powerful and dependable machines and have been embraced by casual and business users alike. The N130 offers plenty of style without the high price tag, and sports a stylish design with a top specification. Samsung's "Easy Resolution Manager" allows you to see the whole picture on your netbook and the picture quality is close to perfection; the N130's 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio immerses you in games and movies with an accurate representation so you don't have any black bands encroaching on your picture.
Review
If you're looking for great value performance and a full size laptop is out of the question you can rely on the Samsung Netbook N130; we bought this model due to strong reputation for quality and performance, and low price. The build quality does seem a bit fragile in places; for example, the connecting joint between keyboard and screen seems a bit weak, but we're hoping that it will prove robust enough for those of us who open their netbooks with a bit more gusto than others. We also noticed that the netbook became slightly hot during use, particularly after watching a movie, so it is important to make sure the ventilation slots are not obstructed.
Battery
If you want a solid, simple netbook you will like this little gem. It's very lightweight and has good battery life that Samsung claim will last some 6hrs or more. The actual battery life of any portable computer is obviously subject to normal usage and configuration as well as model type, but we took the Samsung N130 out of the box, fully charged the battery until the light on left front edge went from orange to green when, and left it on for a day. It didn't last 6 hours, but it lasted a lot longer than many full size laptops, even with intermittent usage.
Conclusion
The differences between the N140 are that the screen is slightly different, there are no stereo speakers, no Bluetooth is provided and the battery is of smaller capacity and therefore shorter life. However, the N130 is Samsung's best value netbook and offers a good keyboard, an Intel Atom N270 processor, Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3 and features, in the case of our model, a matte white finish.
Verdict - The Samsung N130 is a great budget netbook with a decent specification - ideal for school or college work. Affordability meets state-of-the-art technology. 4/5
