The mobile telecoms industry is one of the fastest growing industries within South Africa, and one of the most profitable sectors of the country's economy. The second half of 2011 is expected to see this growth spur tenfold, driven by new gadgets and advancements in technology.

This is why Apple's iPhone suffers in South Africa - as it limits the customer to just one choice. In fact, Apple's iPhone 4 has seized less than 1 percent of the SA market. A survey from earlier this year shows that only 3 percent of the population want one, too, so it's unlikely to take-off.
Wireless technologies - including 3G, WiMax, and WiMax enhanced LTE (long-term evolution) are all expected to make an impact on the country's 2011 market, too. Winston Smith, Managing Director of 4G communications company Alvarion said: The subscriber numbers and uptake of broadband for wireless users is much higher than in cabled options in South Africa, and this trend is set to continue during 2011".
With the spread of high-speed connectivity, it's expected that mobile data usage and social networking will increase in South Africa. "The likes of Linked In, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are all growing to be part of the tools used by organizations to contact people, hire staff, market their products and increase brand awareness," says Smith.
It won't just be mobile phones used for firing-off emails and sending messages, either. During the second-half of the year, it's thought that tablets, such as Apple's iPad and the BlackBerry PlayBook, will begin to outpace laptops and notebooks in South Africa.
Unlike the iPhone 4, Apple's first and second generation iPads have been a huge success. Apple's retail partners in SA sold 'hundreds' or iPad units within hours of its launch, with people queuing before the stores had opened.
South Africa's largest independent telecommunications solutions provider, Nashua Mobile believes that the rapidly growing tablet market could spark new demand for mobile data. This would really benefit the SA networks - including: 8ta, Cell C, MTN Group, Virgin Mobile South Africa and Vodacom - which would see the industry expand even faster.
